History
of the Maple Clinic
Established in
1973
After WW
II, labor unions struggled to get many types of pre-paid
benefits. In the 1970s it was pre-paid mental health
benefits. These benefits were soon extended to white collar
workers.
Expansion of
coverage
Since
there were too few providers to meet this large influx of
people wanting mental health services, Blue Cross Blue
Shield solicited the mental health professionals to form
treatment centers. The Maple Clinic was one of the first to
respond to this invitation. The core group consisted of John
H. Vanderlind, MSW, William J. Robertson, PhD and Edward M.
Wisniewski, MD and contracted with Blue Cross Blue Shield of
Michigan on August 1, 1973 to provide these
services.
Mission
Statement
The
Mission of the Clinic is to provide a full range of mental
health services in one location and to assemble competent
therapists in a collegial atmosphere managed by mental
health professions. The initial composition of the
therapeutic staff was formed by groups from Child Guidance
Clinics and Family Service Agencies. With this
multi-talented staff we are able to offer services to
children, adolescents, adults and families.
Seminars
Sponsored
We have
sponsored twelve seminars and workshops since 1974, bringing
leaders in the field to teach and inspire us.
Expansion of
Services
The Clinic
now has treatment sites in Traverse City and Beulah.
